What is Climate Change?
Climate Change also known as Global Warming is where the greenhouse gas levels have risen higher, faster than usual. Greenhouse gasses are gases that trap heat. The top 5 greenhouse gases in our atmosphere are Water Vapor (H2O), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), surface or low level Ozone (O3), and Nitrous Oxide (N2O). Greenhouse gases are naturally in the Earth's atmosphere so our planet doesn't freeze. Because the levels of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere have risen, the average temperature of the Earth is getting unusually hot, unusually quickly.
What's the cause of the rising levels of Greenhouse gases in our atmosphere? There are multiple causes for the unusually quick rising of Greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. One is humans burning fossil fuels like coal, crude oil, and natural gas. We emit emit greenhouse gases this way by using cars, planes, and cruise ships and making electricity. Doing this creates mostly Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Another is raising too much livestock, like cows and pigs, and throwing many things away. Doing both of these creates Methane (CH4). Even if something you buy at the store doesn't look like it helps the environment, it does most likely take a toll on the planet. Having carbon dioxide in the production of it and the transportation of it does emit greenhouse gases. You also have to power the stores where you buy the products, which creates greenhouse gases from the production of electricity, unless you get electricity from a renewable source.
With more heat, ice from Antarctica and the North Pole is melting causing the water level to rise. It is adding more fresh water to the salty water of the ocean which is changing the pH level and saltiness of the ocean. This is threatening the wildlife that lives in the ocean because they are used to a certain amount of saltiness and balance in the water. Ice also reflects the sun's rays. With less ice, more of the heat from the sun's rays are getting absorbed, trapping more heat. The same thing is happening with deforestation. Deforestation is the loss of forests and trees caused by humans cutting them down. Humans cut down the forests to make space for homes and to use the wood to make things like paper and building materials. Trees breathe in Carbon Dioxide and breathe out Oxygen. When we cut down the trees, we have less trees to clean the air. This means that more of the greenhouse gases that humans emit stays in the atmosphere.
Climate Change is a bad thing, but there are good things coming out of it. Some of the good things that are coming out of Climate Change are new inventions to help fight and lessen the effects of Climate Change. Also, new ways to live that will balance us humans and the Earth, so we can live in a place where wildlife, nature, and humans are stable, are coming out of Climate Change.
You can help the environment right in your house. You can use the new inventions being made and obtain that balance that will help the Earth. EnvirocareLA’s goal (as said throughout the website) is to help people find ways to help fight Climate Change right in their house. You can look throughout the blog for ways to help the environment and I'm sure you can think of some things too. Please take action with the ways you find to help the environment throughout the blog and take action with the ways that you already know. Thank you for helping the fight to save the environment.
